How Yowana Subak is Cultivating Cultural Pride Among Balinese Youth

In the heart of Bali, where the lush green rice paddies stretch as far as the eye can see, a quiet revolution is taking place. It’s not the kind of revolution that makes headlines, but it’s one that’s deeply rooted in the island’s cultural heritage and future sustainability. This is the story of Yowana Subak, a project that’s not just about farming, but about reconnecting Balinese youth with their ancestral land and instilling a sense of pride in their cultural identity.

Yowana Subak Matters

Bali is renowned for its vibrant culture and stunning landscapes, yet beneath this beauty lies a pressing issue. The island’s agricultural land is rapidly being converted for tourism and urban development, threatening the traditional Subak system—a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage that has sustained Balinese agriculture for centuries. The younger generation, lured by the promise of the tourism industry, is increasingly disconnected from these roots.

Yowana Subak emerged from a deep-seated concern for this disconnect. The project aims to educate and engage Balinese youth in regenerative agriculture, highlighting the opportunities that lie in preserving their land and cultural assets. The pandemic underscored the vulnerability of relying solely on tourism, making it clear that a return to agricultural roots could be a path to resilience.

Planting Seeds of Change

The journey of Yowana Subak began with a simple yet profound mission: to bring Balinese youth back to their ancestral land and make them proud to be farmers. With the support of YSEALI Seeds for the Future, the project has taken significant strides. YSEALI has not only provided funding but also mentorship, helping the team navigate the complexities of leadership and program execution.

The project kicked off with a pre-Hackathon phase, where the team focused on recruiting participants. Although they aimed for 30 teams, they successfully engaged 23 teams, a testament to their effective community partnerships. This 77% achievement rate is a promising start, reflecting the growing interest among Balinese youth to reconnect with their heritage.

Lessons in the Field

The journey has been a learning curve, filled with valuable lessons. The Yowana Subak team has honed their skills in time management, project design, and partnership building. Collaborating with professionals like videographers and environmentalists has enriched their approach, bringing diverse perspectives to the table.

One of the most significant takeaways has been the power of teamwork. The project’s success so far is a collective effort, underscoring the belief that “teamwork makes the dream work.” This spirit of collaboration is what makes Yowana Subak not just a project, but a community-driven movement.

 Cultivating a Sustainable Future

As Yowana Subak moves forward, the vision is clear: to continue raising awareness and engaging more Balinese youth in regenerative agriculture. The upcoming online classes are set to deepen participants’ understanding of sustainable farming practices, equipping them with the knowledge to become stewards of their land.

The future holds exciting possibilities. By fostering a sense of pride and ownership among the youth, Yowana Subak aims to create a ripple effect, inspiring more young people to embrace their cultural heritage and contribute to Bali’s sustainability. The project envisions a future where agriculture is not just seen as a livelihood, but as a vital part of Balinese identity and resilience.

A Call to Youth Leaders

To the youth leaders reading this, Yowana Subak is more than an initiative; it’s an invitation. An invitation to be part of a movement that values cultural heritage and sustainability. It’s a call to action for those who believe in the power of community and the importance of preserving our roots for future generations.

As Yowana Subak continues to grow, it seeks passionate individuals who are ready to make a difference. Whether you’re in Bali or beyond, there’s a place for you in this journey. Together, we can cultivate a future that honors the past while embracing the possibilities of tomorrow.

In the words of the Yowana Subak team, “By doing it together, we make the project more meaningful.” So, let’s join hands and sow the seeds of change, one step at a time.
