KAMI untuk SEMUA (KUS) is a program which aims to empower Malaysian female students to be advocates for equality through online capacity building and campaigning. KUS participants were exposed to four online workshops that equipped them with the tools necessary to independently and confidently create conducive environments where they could thrive. Supported by a vibrant ecosystem of like-minded peers, online facilitators, and trained professionals, participants then created “mini–KAMI” Campaigns as part of our “pay-it-forward” advocacy initiative. At the end of the campaign period, the top 5 campaigns were chosen to receive RM2000 each in grant funding.

The seeds of KUS were sown in response to a troubling revelation: invasive period spot checks, inappropriate jokes by educators, and backlash against survivors were rampant in Malaysian schools. These issues sparked a national debate on gender equality and safety in learning environments. With no long-term solutions in sight, the founders of KUS decided to take matters into their own hands. Their mission? To inform female students of their rights, empower them to advocate for equality, and equip them with the resilience and empathy needed to lead.

The team behind KUS is deeply passionate about this cause. They run a female speaking club called Women with Words and have organized numerous capacity-building programs, including the “Break the Barrier” project to support single mothers. For them, this isn’t just a project—it’s a personal mission. The project leader and treasurer are parents to a newborn daughter, and the project secretary is a dedicated schoolteacher. Together, they are committed to creating safer, more inclusive schools for girls.

Building a Community of Advocates

KUS isn’t just about workshops and campaigns; it’s about building a community. In 2022, the program received 134 sign-ups, with 77 participants becoming KAMI Advocates. These young women attended workshops every weekend in August, covering topics like Equality & Dignity, Effective Communication, Mental Resilience, and Community Advocacy. Each session was a blend of expert insights and collaborative discussions, fostering a supportive environment where participants could learn and grow together.

In September, the advocates put their newfound skills to the test by launching 11 mini-KAMI Campaigns. These initiatives tackled pressing issues such as workplace inequality, sex crimes, and abuse in schools. The culmination of their efforts was celebrated on October 1st, when five campaign winners were awarded RM2000 each to continue their advocacy work. But the impact of KUS extends far beyond these campaigns.

Stories of Impact and Inspiration

The success stories emerging from KUS are nothing short of inspiring. Participants continue to connect through an online hub on Discord, sharing ideas and supporting each other’s advocacy efforts. Many have taken their campaigns online, creating videos that highlight casual sexism and share personal experiences of sexual abuse. Some of these videos have gone viral, raising awareness and sparking important conversations.

The impact of KUS is also evident in the informative infographics created by participants on topics like migrant workers, the glass ceiling, and personal boundaries. These resources have engaged other students and fostered meaningful discussions. Additionally, some groups have conducted surveys on issues such as child grooming and consent, while others have launched petitions to combat rape culture. The ripple effect of KUS is undeniable, as participants continue to champion equality and inspire others to join the cause.
