Bakeries’ demands for always-fresh products leave a gap that has the potential to produce food waste if the bakery continues to produce excessively. If there is surplus bread that is still edible, The Food Heroes program will help it be distributed to food insecure people, while surplus bread that is not edible will be distributed for animal feed, according to the Food Recovery Hierarchy principle.

The Food Heroes program does this by facilitating collaboration across sectors with the goal of reducing food waste and fighting hunger. Currently, our program includes partnerships with 4 bakeries, 13 beneficiary organizations, and 22 volunteers.
