How Young Leaders in the Philippines Are Busting Disasters One Step at a Time
In the heart of the Pacific Typhoon Belt, where the winds howl and the earth occasionally trembles, a group of young leaders in the Philippines is quietly making waves. They call themselves #DisasterBusters, and their mission is as bold as it is necessary: to reduce the harmful impacts of natural disasters and foster climate resilience in their communities. This is their story—a tale of passion, collaboration, and hope for a safer future.
A Mission Born from Urgency
The Philippines is no stranger to nature’s fury. With an average of 20 tropical cyclones visiting annually, and its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire, the country is a hotspot for earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis. For many Filipinos, these aren’t just statistics—they’re lived realities. Yet, amidst these challenges, the #DisasterBusters project emerged in 2021 with a clear purpose: to empower about 60 young leaders passionate about disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) and climate resilience.
But why focus on youth? The answer is simple. Young people are not only the most affected by these disasters but also the most capable of driving change. By equipping them with the right tools and knowledge, #DisasterBusters aims to create a ripple effect, inspiring communities to take proactive measures against natural hazards.
Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges
One of the project’s core strengths lies in its interdisciplinary approach. By bringing together participants from diverse backgrounds, #DisasterBusters fosters collaboration and breaks down barriers that often hinder effective disaster management. Inclusivity is at the heart of their mission, encouraging participation from persons with disabilities, indigenous groups, and the LGBT community. This diversity enriches the conversation and ensures that no voice is left unheard.
The project also tackles a critical issue: the jargon-filled language of disaster management. For many, these technical terms can be alienating, even life-threatening, when clear communication is needed most. #DisasterBusters is committed to demystifying these concepts, making them accessible to all, and ensuring that efforts to mainstream DRRM continue, even amidst a global pandemic.
Achievements and Impact
Since its inception, #DisasterBusters has made significant strides. The team has produced engaging content for their social media platforms, completed the selection of youth fellows, and prepared a comprehensive training design for their capacity-building program. From July to October 2021, these young leaders will undergo a series of virtual activities designed to enhance their skills and knowledge.
Moreover, the project has already held minor capacity-building activities for its team members, utilizing tools like Canva, Animaker, and Padlet. These sessions not only equip participants with practical skills but also foster a sense of community and shared purpose.
Partnerships with other youth organizations are also in the works, amplifying the project’s reach and impact. By building a network of young DRRM and climate resilience advocates, #DisasterBusters is laying the groundwork for sustainable action plans that can be implemented across various communities.
Lessons Learned and Success Stories
Every journey comes with its lessons, and #DisasterBusters is no exception. The team has learned the importance of adaptability, especially in the face of unforeseen challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic. They’ve discovered that passion and commitment can overcome even the most daunting obstacles, and that collaboration is key to achieving lasting change.
Among the success stories is that of a young fellow who, inspired by the project, initiated a community-based disaster preparedness program in her hometown. Her efforts have not only increased awareness but also empowered her neighbors to take proactive steps in safeguarding their lives and properties.
Looking Ahead: Dreams and Aspirations
As #DisasterBusters looks to the future, their goals remain ambitious yet attainable. They envision a Philippines where disaster risk management is an integral part of everyday life. By working closely with their youth fellows, they aim to contribute to this vision, building a resilient nation ready to face whatever challenges nature may bring.
The support from YSEALI Seeds for the Future has been instrumental in this journey. It has provided a platform for young advocates to leverage their expertise and collaborate with others, enhancing and mainstreaming DRRM and climate resilience across sectors.
In the end, #DisasterBusters is more than just a project—it’s a movement. A movement driven by young leaders determined to make a difference, one step at a time. As they continue to bust disasters and build resilience, they invite others to join them on this journey. Because when it comes to safeguarding our future, every action counts.
