We aim to bring human-centered solutions to off-grid mountainous communities through collaborative efforts. Currently, we’re working with the indigenous Hanunuo Mangyan Tribe, located in a geographically Isolated and depressed area in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro, to help ease problems associated with a lack of access to basic goods and services.

Locally known as “Tindahan Para Sa Tanan” (Store For Everyone), we are setting up a community-owned and operated store that aims to provide basic needs in terms of supplies (e.g. food, school supplies), power (e.g. small charging station) and health (e.g. medicine).

Bringing Light and Hope to the Mountains of the Philippines

In the heart of the Philippines, nestled among the rugged terrains of Oriental Mindoro, lies a story of resilience, hope, and community. It’s a tale that begins with a simple yet profound mission: to bring human-centered solutions to the off-grid mountainous communities of the Hanunuo Mangyan Tribe. This is the story of Mountain Support, a project that has not only changed lives but also inspired a movement.

The Birth of a Mission

The journey of Mountain Support began in 2018, during a visit to a Mangyan village. The team witnessed firsthand the harsh realities faced by the indigenous people living in these isolated areas. It was a moment that stirred something deep within them—a mix of anger at the inequality and discrimination, and a burning desire to make a difference. The experience was a catalyst, igniting a passion to address the lack of access to basic goods and services in these communities.

Fast forward to 2022, and Mountain Support was born. Locally known as “Tindahan Para Sa Tanan” or “Store For Everyone,” the project set out to establish a community-owned and operated store. This store would provide essential supplies such as food, school materials, and medicine, along with a small charging station powered by solar energy. The goal was clear: to fight against generational poverty and systemic discrimination, and to empower the Mangyan tribe to take charge of their future.

Building a Community, One Step at a Time

The success of Mountain Support lies in its collaborative approach. The project partnered with the Mangyan tribe to establish the Paminhian Mangyan Store, a local organization dedicated to serving the community’s 100 households. This wasn’t just about providing resources; it was about fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among the tribe members.

One of the most significant achievements of Mountain Support was the installation of a small solar power system in the village. This was more than just a technical upgrade; it was a symbol of hope and progress. The team trained the community members on how to operate and maintain the system, ensuring its sustainability. The tribe’s commitment was evident when they offered a goat as a security deposit for the solar power system, showcasing their dedication and sense of responsibility.

Lessons Learned and Stories of Success

Throughout this journey, Mountain Support has learned invaluable lessons. One of the most important is the power of listening. By involving the community in every step of the process, the project has fostered a sense of ownership and empowerment. It’s a reminder that true change comes from within, and that building capacity and giving responsibilities is the quickest way to empower people.

The impact of Mountain Support has not gone unnoticed. The project recently won the final pitching of the Youth Energy Academy held by the Regional Resource Center for Asia and the Pacific at the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved.

Looking to the Future

While Mountain Support has achieved significant milestones, the journey is far from over. The team is committed to continuing their work beyond the YSEALI Seeds timeline. They are actively engaging in discussions on how to better serve indigenous communities and expand their reach. The goal is to create a ripple effect, inspiring other youth leaders to take action and make a difference in their own communities.
