Right Thing to SEA a Journey of Youth Empowerment and Marine Stewardship in Karas

In the heart of Indonesia, where the ocean’s whispers are a constant companion, a group of passionate young leaders embarked on a mission to protect and preserve the marine ecosystem. This is the story of “Right Thing to SEA,” a project that has not only raised awareness about ecosystem services but has also inspired a new generation of youth leaders to take charge of their coastal communities.

The Call of the Sea

Indonesia, a maritime nation, has always had a deep connection with its surrounding seas. The ocean provides sustenance, livelihoods, and a way of life for many. Yet, despite its importance, the sea’s ecosystem has often been neglected. The founders of Right Thing to SEA recognized this imbalance and felt a profound responsibility to address it. They understood that the coastal communities, particularly the youth, were both the most affected by and the least aware of the deteriorating marine environment.

The project was born out of a desire to empower these communities, to equip them with the knowledge and tools needed to protect their precious resources. The founders believed that by raising awareness among the youth, they could create a ripple effect that would lead to sustainable marine resource management.

Building Bridges and Trust

With the support of YSEALI Seeds for the Future, Right Thing to SEA began its journey in 2021. The project team made two significant trips to the remote island of Karas, one in April and another in June. These visits were not just about imparting knowledge; they were about building relationships and trust with the local community.

In between these trips, the team maintained an active online presence through social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. This digital engagement allowed them to share their findings, connect with locals, and prepare for their initial workshop. The team also collaborated with Akar Bhumi Indonesia, an NGO focused on mangrove education and planting, to enhance their training efforts.

During their second trip, the team conducted a simulation of their upcoming workshop, with 10-15 enthusiastic participants. This hands-on approach allowed them to refine their methods and ensure that the workshop would be impactful and relevant to the community’s needs.

Lessons from the Field

As the project progressed, the team encountered valuable lessons that reshaped their approach. They discovered that theory often diverges from practice, and that true learning comes from listening to the locals. This exchange of knowledge became a cornerstone of their work, fostering a sense of mutual respect and collaboration.

The team’s humility and willingness to adapt were key to gaining the trust of the community. They learned that change cannot be rushed, and that meaningful progress often comes from taking the time to understand and appreciate the local context.

Success Stories and Future Aspirations

Right Thing to SEA’s journey has been marked by numerous success stories. One of the most significant achievements has been the project’s ability to connect with the community on a deeper level. By giving the locals a platform to express their thoughts and concerns, the team has fostered a sense of ownership and responsibility among the youth.

The project has also inspired future applicants and youth leaders to take action in their own communities. The team’s dedication and passion have shown that even small initiatives can have a profound impact when driven by genuine care and commitment.

Looking ahead, Right Thing to SEA aims to expand its reach and continue its mission of raising awareness about ecosystem services. The team envisions a future where coastal communities are not only aware of the importance of marine resource management but are actively involved in protecting and preserving their environment.

A Call to Action

As the story of Right Thing to SEA unfolds, it serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that young leaders can have on their communities. It is a call to action for future applicants and youth leaders to take up the mantle of marine stewardship and make a difference in their own unique ways.

The ocean’s whispers continue to echo through the hearts of those who have been touched by this project. And as the waves crash upon the shores of Karas, they carry with them the promise of a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
