Protection of Gunung Palung National Park (TANAGUPA) has been an important step in protecting Kalimantan’s unique species of flora and fauna including the orangutans. However, like national parks worldwide the banning of traditional use by local communities has had devastating effects on the surrounding human communities and surrounding forests. In particular, many Kalimantan’s young women are suffering from poor health, education, and economic opportunities. This initiative will be an incubator program to create a path to economic independence for these young women while jump-starting the area’s ecotourism economy by training Indonesia’s first entirely female ecotourism ambassadors and tour guide certification body to ensure high standards as well as the digital entrepreneurship through various capacity building.

The forests around Gunung Palung National Park have long been under threat. Illegal logging, plantation expansion, and encroachment have fragmented these vital ecosystems, putting both the flora and fauna, including the iconic orangutans, at risk. But the impact extends beyond the environment. The local communities, particularly young women, face limited opportunities for education, health, and economic independence.

Recognizing this dual challenge, Pongo Academy was born. Its mission is clear: to create a path to economic independence for young women while fostering an ecotourism economy that respects and preserves the natural world. By training Indonesia’s first entirely female ecotourism ambassadors and tour guides, Pongo Academy aims to set a new standard for sustainable tourism and digital entrepreneurship.

The Journey So Far

Since its inception in 2021, Pongo Academy has made significant strides. The core of its success lies in its workshops, which have reached 60 young women across four villages, including Laman Satong. These workshops are more than just training sessions; they are incubators of change, equipping participants with skills in tourism management, “women-preneurship,” and forest and orangutan ambassador marketing.

One of the standout achievements is the collaboration with Parahita Borneo, a local startup. This partnership has not only provided a market for eco-friendly polybags woven by the academy’s trainees but also integrated them into Parahita Borneo’s planting projects. The result? A sustainable cycle of production and consumption that benefits both the environment and the local economy, with 500 eco polybags sold to date.
